I Have No Words to Describe

I Have No Words to Describe, a collaborative project with Maya Lerner, is an index and personal interpretation of 42 vintage postcards found in second hand shops. The postcards have been given two ways of presentation: In a series of five booklets, which contain fragments of text and cropped images from different postcards, arranged into a new narrative sequence, and a book containing all postcards in full.

The booklets contain each a different story, pieced together from text fragments and enlarged images from the postcards. Each text appears before the respective postcard's image. The juxtaposition of texts and images to form narratives not found in the original postcards highlights the process of the creation of meaning, and the nature of postcards themselves: Personal communication found on the back of seemingly unrelated, impersonal and even kitsch images. The cropping of certain images and placing them in a new context gives them a narrative logic and creates a connection between bits of information sent by people in different places and times, strangers to each other.

The book contains full scans all postcards, arranged chronologically. It serves as a legend and manual to the stories, enabling the readers to see the original context from which phrases and images were lifted.
